In which countries do second-hand clothes usually sell well

Driven by factors such as consumption downgrading and the popularization of environmental protection concepts, second-hand clothing has gained immense popularity in many European and American countries. It also enjoys strong sales momentum in parts of Latin America and Asia. Here are the details:

1. European Countries

  • France: The second-hand clothing market here is even more competitive than fast fashion. In Q1 2025, second-hand clothing sales accounted for 10.9% of the total market, with the proportion reaching as high as 16.3% among young consumers. Vinted, a second-hand platform, surpassed e-commerce giants like Amazon to become France’s top clothing seller in the quarter. Its monthly unique visitors remain consistently high, with approximately 20% of online clothing transactions taking place on second-hand platforms.
  • Germany: The German second-hand e-commerce market has nearly doubled in sales since 2019, reaching 9.9 billion euros in 2024 with a year-on-year growth of 7.2%. As a major European market, German consumers also favor second-hand clothing. Fast fashion giants like ZARA have expanded their second-hand platforms to Germany to seize market share.
  • United Kingdom: Second-hand clothing sales in the UK once surged sharply within a year, with sales of second-hand items on fashion website Asos growing by 92% at one point. Local consumers, from young fashionistas to some elderly groups, have the habit of buying and selling second-hand clothing, and both online and offline second-hand clothing trading channels are highly active.

2. American Countries

  • United States: The US is the core global market for second-hand clothing. In 2024, its online second-hand clothing market expanded by 23% to a value of 22 billion US dollars, growing five times faster than the overall retail clothing market. Sales of second-hand clothing and accessories on eBay soared by 400% year-on-year. 68% of Gen Z and millennials purchase second-hand goods, and the US online second-hand clothing market is expected to reach approximately 40 billion US dollars by 2029.
  • Mexico: Mexico’s second-hand clothing market is growing rapidly, with transaction volume increasing by 4% in 2024. From January to October that year, sales rose from 900,000 pieces to 1 million pieces. Platform Go Trendier once set a record of selling one second-hand garment every 10 seconds. It is estimated that 73% of Mexican consumers will buy second-hand clothing through various platforms in 2025.

3. Asian Countries

  • South Korea: Second-hand fashion has emerged as a dark horse in the local market with a growth rate of 48.7%, and 35.4% of second-hand transactions focus on clothing. 75.3% of local consumers hold a positive attitude towards second-hand transactions, with an average spending of about 370 RMB per second-hand transaction. Light luxury second-hand clothing is particularly popular locally.

4. Countries in Other Regions

  • New Zealand: The circular economy is deeply rooted in society, with the total value of the second-hand market reaching 5.5 billion US dollars. Clothing is one of the most popular categories. Nearly 90% of New Zealanders have purchased second-hand goods within six months, and second-hand clothing transactions have been deeply integrated into local people’s daily lives.
  • Many African Countries: Africa has long been a key market for second-hand clothing, with a large number of second-hand garments suitable for summer imported here. Local consumers have a strong demand for cost-effective clothing. Many well-preserved second-hand clothes have become a popular choice for many people due to their price advantage, and second-hand clothing can be seen everywhere in street markets and small shops.
